EGR valves can fail in many ways, the most common fault is the valve getting stuck in the open position causing excessive smoke from the exhaust, when this happens the engine management light will illuminate and the vehicle will often go into limp home mode causing reduced power and driving speed.
Other EGR problems include, open circuit faults in the wiring, electronic faults in the valve motor and faults with sensors within the EGR valve and EGR cooler faults.
